Each counselor on our staff is passionate about working with adolescent kids in all aspects of counseling and therapies. We also utilize Play Therapy, which is a more natural language of kids that allows each child an opportunity for both emotional expression, self-esteem growth and the development of coping skills. It also helps a child develop decision-making skills, improves responsibility and self-control in a safe, non-threatening, therapeutic manner (environment).
Austin Education counselors are also trained and use a variety of evidence based approaches that specialize in working with adolescent kids and teenagers.
During a clients initial appointment they will take an assessment that looks into multiple areas of the clients life. The assessment is designed to take a comprehensive look at the clients behavior at home, school, and in their community, as well as the clients medical and family histories. This thorough evaluation is important because it helps us to identify any psychological disorders, substance abuse disorders, or risky behaviors that need to be addressed in treatment. It also allows their counselor to look at core issues to truly understand a clients unique personal history. The Counselor will then develop an individualized treatment plan that takes into account the clients strengths, (weaknesses) and the factors that motivate them to change.
Depending on a clients specific needs, we may provide strategies to reduce anxiety, stress, depression, hopelessness, or self-doubt. The goal is to help motivate the client to find safe, healthy coping skills to replace unhealthy coping skills, like drug or alcohol abuse, self-harm behaviors, or sexually acting out. Often this means that we will work with a client to improve their self-esteem and gain a sense of belonging, competence, and responsibility.
Other times we may need to guide a client in ways to learn how to manage anger or control impulsive behavior. We can also teach a client ways to cope with traumatic events such as the death of a loved one, PTSD, physical and sexual abuse or provide a client support in learning to express oneself appropriately and improve your communication with friends, families, and authority figures. Our counseling and therapies are designed to provide clients support as they endure difficult changes in their individual lives, family or community, with the goal to provide each client a sense of renewed hope and optimism.

The discipline known as Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) has been emerging as a very effective therapeutic approach. It is not a horsemanship program but rather a guided exercise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy utilizing experiential exercises with horses. Through this form of therapy, clients get to heal through interacting with horses. During therapy sessions, the client will participate in various activities while under the supervision of a mental health professional along with a horse handler. Activities can include:
The handler will ensure the safety of both the client and the horse while the mental health professional will observe the interactions between the animal and the client. These interactions can help the staff member determine how clients process their feelings and thoughts while also identifying possible patterns in behavior. This information can help structure other psychotherapy sessions to ensure each client is getting the help they need.
In this experience, the horse serves as a powerful psychological catalyst for change. A team comprised of the client, a therapist and a horse professional form the basis of EAP. Many of our clients’ problems and their connective solutions are revealed through interaction with the horses. First, the clients learn to identify horse behaviors through the horse’s reactions to the clients. Eventually, through working on themselves, the clients learn to work in harmony with the horses.
Our EAP program is an important component of an overall treatment philosophy that we have developed through study and practice. Mental health problems affect all areas of life, so treatment should do the same. The EAP program combines positive reinforcement training (promoting self esteem), active listening, good communication and physical wellness, and emotional hardiness training.
EAP requires both classroom training and hands-on work. Combining the two is more effective than talk therapy alone. During this process, the clients’ character traits and methods of dealing with situations become starkly evident. They learn to recognize and control their faulty thinking patterns, actions and reactions.
The clients gain skill at communicating with others and are better able to pin-point unhealthy living habits. These positive changes result in a deep sense of responsibility and empowerment which ultimately gives them back their lives.
